Discovering Renier Perfumes — Cuban Art Meets Niche Perfumery
Some fragrance houses tell stories. Renier Perfumes is one of the few that paints them first.
Founded by Cuban artist Renier Rodríguez Méndez, this Prague-based niche house operates on a simple, radical premise: every fragrance is designed in parallel with an original painting. The bottle, the label, the storytelling, the composition itself — all emerge from a single creative act. You are not just buying a perfume. You are buying an olfactory reading of a work of art.
Renier Perfumes is now available at FND SCENTS boutique in central Palma de Mallorca. In this guide we introduce the maison, its four distinct collections, and why we chose Renier for our carefully edited catalogue.
The Founder: An Artist Turned Perfumer
Renier Rodríguez Méndez is a third-generation plastic artist from the Caribbean, whose creative foundation was built through early exposure to painting, ceramics and sculpture. As a child, he was introduced to art through clay modelling and later developed a deep sensory connection with the materials he worked with — leather, pigments, wood, natural elements — particularly through their aromas.
His earliest olfactory memories were drawn from the Cuban countryside: night-blooming jasmine, pomarosa, guava and other local flora. Due to limited access to commercial perfumery in Cuba, those scent memories remained vivid and closely linked to colour and place. After relocating to Europe, Renier finally encountered modern perfumery and began collaborating with master perfumer Daniel Josier. From that partnership, Renier Perfumes was born.
Today the house collaborates with an impressive roster of noses: Christian Carbonnel (also known as Chris Maurice), Miguel Matos, Juan M. Perez, and Renier himself as perfumer on many of his signature releases. Every fragrance is a collaboration between painter and nose.
The Renier Philosophy: Painting the Invisible
The most distinctive element of Renier Perfumes is the painting-fragrance pair. Each composition is created in parallel with an original artwork by Renier — never as an afterthought, never as marketing. The scent is the painting, translated into another sense.
This gives every Renier release an unusual density. Havana Rain is not just a coffee gourmand; it is a portrait of morning Cuba, of street greetings, of orange trees blooming after rain. Anacaona is not just a floral extrait; it is an homage to a 15th-century Taíno princess and to the pioneering women of Cuban music history. Cacique is a warrior-king in a bottle. Ris Tanama is a princess flying like a butterfly to freedom.
The bottles are elegant and quiet — black glass with clean typography, letting the label art breathe. The paintings themselves are available separately at the maison's Prague atelier.
The Four Collections
Renier organises the catalogue into four distinct lines, each with its own aesthetic and price point.
Rain Collection · Eau de Parfum
The Rain Collection is Renier's contemporary line — modern Eaux de Parfum designed as accessible entries into the house. The name refers to the way rain reveals scent from soil, wood and skin.
Kisses Rain Labios Rotos (€145) — A sensual floral-spicy composition with bergamot, rose, jasmine, oud, coffee, tolu balsam and vanilla. Nose: Daniel Josier. A rain of kisses for a modern love.
Havana Rain (€145) — A tropical Cuban gourmand: orange, mint, ginger, pineapple over coffee, chocolate, hazelnut, milk and vanilla, grounded in leather, sandalwood and amber. Nose: Renier R. Mendez. An olfactory greeting — "Asere, ¿qué bolá?"
Incense Rain (€145) — A bold woody-incense composition with red fruits and pink pepper opening, patchouli-jasmine-cedar heart, and a smoky base of vetiver, castoreum, incense, oakmoss, guaiac and vanilla. Nose: Chris Maurice.
Oud Rain (€135) — Tropical joy wrapped in oud. Mango, papaya, pineapple and tangerine over Cambodian oud, saffron and sandalwood, grounded in cedar and labdanum. Nose: Daniel Josier. Optimistic, conquering, distinctly niche.
Oud Rain Tropical Storm (€145) — The darker, deeper evolution of Oud Rain. Blood mandarin, Cambodian oud and tobacco in the base. Nose: Renier R. Mendez. The storm to the rain.
Taino Collection · Extrait de Parfum
The Taino Collection is Renier's most personal and culturally rich line — a homage to Cuba's indigenous heritage in the form of highly-concentrated Extraits de Parfum. Each fragrance is dedicated to a figure, place or concept from Taíno culture, the pre-colonial civilisation of the Caribbean.
Guanabo (€226) — Guanabo means "small island in the middle of the sea" in Taíno. A fresh, salty, floral summer Extrait: lemon, bergamot, passion fruit, jasmine, marine notes, seaweed, leather and ambroxan. Nose: Miguel Matos. The sexiest fragrance in the collection — the son of a chief, virile, adventurous.
Cacique (€226) — The King. Bold spicy woody Extrait with labdanum, juniper, pink pepper and pine tree opening, Indian oud, sandalwood, orris and incense at the heart, and Cambodian oud, caramel, vanilla and raspberry in the base. A crown in a bottle — not for everyone.
Anacaona (€226) — The Queen. Dedicated to the 15th-century Taíno princess who composed poems and areítos, and to the pioneering first all-female Cuban orchestra founded in 1930 in her honour. Osmanthus, ylang ylang, geranium, rose, jasmine, violet, amber, vanilla and sandalwood. Nose: Christian Carbonnel. Absolute feminine sophistication.
Ris Tanama (€235) — A princess who escaped her abductors and flies like a butterfly to freedom. Tender cherry acidified with natural lime, orange blossom, jasmine, five-year aged Cambodian oud, palisander rosewood, sandalwood, castoreum, vanilla, musk and amber. Nose: Renier R. Mendez.
Caprichos Collection · Extrait de Parfum
The Caprichos Collection is Renier's most recent line and his most experimental — surreal compositions, unusual note pairings, poetic concepts. The name refers to Goya's Caprichos engravings: playful, dark, imaginative.
Amor Vertical (€180) — Inspired by Japanese bamboo. Green apple, orange blossom, lavender, thyme over marzipan, bamboo, Turkish rose, sandalwood and cedar, grounded in vanilla, benzoin, patchouli, musk and vetiver. Nose: Renier R. Mendez. A mantra in every drop — presented at Esxence 2025.
Oddyssea (€180) — A surreal Odyssey composition. Fig, pineapple, lavender, neroli over Mysore sandalwood, tuberose, fig leaf, saffron and orris, ending in ambergris, marine notes, Bourbon vetiver and amber. The sea does not move forward: it remembers.
Aura Rubrum (€180) — Vivid red fruits over a creamy, ambery base. Raspberry, dewberry, saffron, lychee, sandalwood, yogurt, rum, mahogany, vanilla, amber and musk. Nose: Renier R. Mendez. Warm gourmand indulgence.
Special Editions
Paloma (€145) — The Special Editions line collects Renier's occasional releases, including Paloma — a fruity-sweet composition released in 2024 alongside Baracoa. Named for the Spanish word for "dove" — a symbol of peace, freedom and quiet resilience. Nose: Renier R. Mendez in collaboration with Chris Maurice.
Why We Curated Renier for FND SCENTS
At FND SCENTS, we edit the catalogue tightly. Every house we carry needs to earn its place next to Floraïku, Room 1015, Liquides Imaginaires, Laurent Mazzone, Namos and the rest. Renier earned its place for five reasons:
- Artistic authenticity — the painting-fragrance pair is not marketing; it is the founder's actual practice as a plastic artist. Every fragrance has visual DNA.
- Range and depth — 13 fragrances across four distinct collections, spanning fresh aquatics (Guanabo), warm gourmands (Havana Rain, Aura Rubrum), meditative woods (Amor Vertical), deep orientals (Cacique), and intimate florals (Anacaona). A serious catalogue.
- Cultural specificity — the Taino Collection is one of the most culturally rooted lines in contemporary niche perfumery. Not exoticism — genuine heritage translated into scent.
- Perfumer collaborations — working with Daniel Josier, Christian Carbonnel, Miguel Matos alongside Renier himself gives each collection distinctive character while maintaining artistic coherence.
- Price accessibility — Rain Collection EDPs at €135–145 make Renier one of the more accessible serious niche houses. Discovery is genuinely possible.
